International schools must teach Malay language, nationhood to all Malaysian children, says Anwar

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has flagged 249 international schools for lax teaching of Bahasa Malaysia.

When tabling the 2026 Budget, Anwar said international schools must ensure the teaching of Malay language and nationhood to all Malaysian children.

"Bahasa Malaysia is the nation's identity that must continue to be nurtured in every citizen.

"It is not merely a language of communication, but a language of knowledge, culture and unity," he said, while tabling the Supply 2026 Bill, in parliament on Friday (Oct 10).

Anwar has assured that the Education Ministry would continue to prioritise the subject as the language of knowledge in all schools and streams.

At the same time, Anwar assured that mastery of the English language in the national education system must be prioritised from a young age.
