KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat will be given a comprehensive briefing on the Kampung Sungai Baru issue on Thursday (Oct 9), says Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa (pic).
"I believe we will be able to clarify more details during that session," the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) told the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Oct 6).
Datuk Azman Nasrudin (PN-Padang Serai) had asked about the development models used by the government to implement a more economically sustainable method of ensuring that land ownership remains with the Malay community and of generating income for the original owners.
Azman also wanted to know the reasons why the development of Malay reserve land in Kuala Lumpur, such as Kampung Baru, faces significant challenges, and the extent to which factors like overlapping land ownership and limited market value contribute to this issue.
Dr Zaliha responded that the government is currently implementing several plans to cover the needs of the land owners and, in the process, find those who are interested in redeveloping the land.
"This is currently in discussion involving the (Prime Minister's Department), developers and government-linked companies, to find where we can cooperate.
"What is more important is that we ensure residents who agree to (redevelopment) are given the homes they have been awaiting for more than nine years," she added.
Dr Zaliha added that it should be the government’s focus to resolve these issues and ensure that the redevelopment in Kampung Sungai Baru and Kampung Baru becomes a catalyst for progress in Kuala Lumpur, specifically in preserving the people’s heritage.
