MELAKA: A 48-year-old Egyptian man has been remanded for four days by the Melaka Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh here for allegedly assaulting, strangling and threatening to kill his wife.
Magistrate N. Sivashangari issued the remand order until Oct 8 on Sunday (Oct 5) to assist investigations under Section 323 of the Penal Code and Section 18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994.
According to sources, the incident occurred at about 10am on Saturday (Oct 4) at a hotel in Banda Hilir here when the 57-year-old victim discovered a cigarette box believed to belong to her husband.
The box contained a glass tube, slices of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis and a small packet of a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
When the man realised the drugs were missing, an argument ensued before the suspect allegedly grabbed his wife by the neck and pressed a pillow over her face.
The suspect later found the box inside the victim's handbag before leaving the hotel.
Upon returning around 11.30am, the man wrapped the dried leaves and smoked them while drinking alcohol in front of the woman.
Another quarrel broke out, during which the man slapped the victim, punched the victim in the stomach several times and lifted her towards the balcony as if intending to throw her off.
The victim, who sustained injuries to her face, neck, abdomen and arms, sought treatment at Hospital Melaka before lodging a police report at the Banda Hilir Police Station on the same day.
Following the report, the suspect was detained and tested positive for cannabis.
