Perak Health Dept to monitor vape shops after decision to stop renewing licences from Jan 1

IPOH: The Perak Health Department will work with government agencies and local councils to ensure that shops in the state comply with the phasing out of vape sales, following the decision to stop issuing licences to vape shops from Jan 1.

State housing and local government committee chairman Sandrea Ng said the Health Department will liaise with all 15 local councils across Perak in enforcing the gradual ban.

"After Jan 1, (the department and local authorities will) ensure that, since no more licences will be issued... shops and other vape outlets comply.

"I believe (the Health Department) has already held engagement sessions with business owners before this policy was introduced," she told reporters after attending the Ipoh Local Plan 2035 draft publicity and public participation programme here on Friday (Oct 3).

"At the state level, when other states began implementing the ban, Perak also decided to do the same.

"However, we considered that some shops still had valid licences.

"For those already operating legally, we gave them time to (make the arrangements for) their businesses.

"That is why Perak chose Jan 1 (to begin) enforcement, to allow enough time for adjustment," she added.

On Oct 1, it was reported that the state would stop issuing or renewing licences for vape devices and related products from Jan 1.

Local councils would still renew licences this year, for a period of one year, but no further renewals would be granted after that.

Existing licence holders would be allowed to operate until the expiry of their permits.
