Series of events lined up next month in Sarawak to celebrate Wan Junaidi's birthday

KUCHING: Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar's 79th birthday will be celebrated with a series of events next month.

State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the main event would be the birthday parade at Padang Merdeka here on Oct 11.

"A total of 100 contingents from uniform bodies, government agencies and non-governmental organisations will take part in the parade.

"We expect 10,000 people to attend the parade," he told a press conference after chairing a meeting on the celebration on Thursday (Sept 25).

Abdul Karim said the parade would be followed by a state investiture ceremony at Astana Negeri Sarawak, while a state banquet would take place at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Complex in the evening.

"There will be a fireworks display on Oct 11 after the state banquet," he said.

Abdul Karim said thanksgiving ceremonies would be held ahead of the parade, with one for Muslims at Masjid Jamek here on Oct 9 and another one organised by the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) at Imperial Hotel on Oct 10.

Other events lined up for the celebration include a concert at Padang Merdeka on Oct 11 and high tea reception at Riverside Majestic Hotel on Oct 12.

"Artists from Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia will perform at the concert.

"We hope Sarawakians will come from far and near to attend the concert and join in the birthday celebration of our Head of State," Abdul Karim said.
