S'wak rep issues reminder of common scam tactics after victim seeks help at service centre

SIBU: A Sarawak assemblyman has reminded the public to beware of frequently-used scam tactics after a victim sought help from his service centre.

Datuk Michael Tiang, the representative for Pelawan, said his centre's staff had to accompany the victim, who was not fluent in Bahasa Malaysia, to lodge a report at a police station.

In a statement on Wednesday (Sept 24), Tiang pointed out some of the more prevalent scam tactics.

These include: promises of big paydays by performing "tasks" on online shopping platforms; sending victims unfamiliar links that redirect them to fraudulent or phishing websites; and get-rich-quick investment opportunities promoted online, usually via gambling platforms.

"Scammers are constantly devising new tactics to deceive people.

"The only effective way to protect ourselves and our families is to remain vigilant and not place trust too readily," noted Tiang, the state Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister.

He also commended the victim for showing courage by coming forward and helping to remind others to always be vigilant against scammers.
