Butane gas leak area in Kerteh declared safe by police after zero readings recorded

CHUKAI: The PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB) site at the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) construction area in Kerteh, where a butane gas leak was reported, has been brought under control and declared safe.

Kemaman district police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said gas detectors installed by the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and PETRONAS at eight locations showed zero readings on Tuesday (Sept 23) afternoon.

Subsequently, police have allowed 21 occupants of the Al-Muqarabbin Tahfiz Centre in Kerteh, who were relocated to a safer location last Sunday, to return to the centre and resume their activities.

"As of noon today, all detectors recorded zero readings, including the area near the tunnel.

"With these latest readings, the situation has been confirmed to be under control and safe. The surrounding community need not worry and may go about their daily activities as usual,” he said in a statement today.

However, Supt Mohd Razi said for now, the authorities will still be monitoring the development and situation at the site and the public has also been advised not to approach the site and to comply with the safety instructions issued. - Bernama
