MUAR: Four local fishermen aged between 40 and 50 have been detained after testing positive for methamphetamine during a joint operation at sea.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the state National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) carried out the integrated operation between 10pm and midnight in the waters off Tanjung Emas, Muar, from Thursday (September 18) to Friday (Sept 19).
Batu Pahat Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the operation involved MMEA patrol boats Penggalang 30 and Petir 85, as well as 12 AADK officers from the Johor and Muar branches.
“Seven local fishing vessels were inspected throughout the two-day operation.
Urine tests on the crew members found four of them positive for methamphetamine,” he said on Sunday (Sept 21).
He added that the four suspects were detained and handed over to AADK for further investigation under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
Mohammad Zaini also said that two of the fishing vessels were released and returned to their owners.
He added that MMEA remains committed to intensifying joint operations with other enforcement agencies to keep the country’s waters free from crime, including drug abuse.
“This cooperation not only strengthens maritime security but also sends a clear message that firm action without compromise will be taken against anyone who breaks the law,” he added.
