Johor MMEA detains ship for illegal anchoring near Pulau Kukup

JOHOR BARU: A ship was detained for illegally anchoring near Pulau Kukup, says the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Its acting Johor director, Kama Azri Kamil, said the ship's crew members were also detained during the incident about 1.1 nautical miles Southwest of Pulau Kukup at 10am on Thursday (Sept 11).

"They not only committed an offence, but the vessel also blocked the passage of other vessels entering the area," he added.

He added that an MMEA vessel was dispatched after the ship, a landing craft tank, failed to respond when hailed using the radio," he said, adding that there were nine crew members with proper identifications.

They comprised five Nigerians and four Indonesians aged 19 to 55.

"The ship captain failed to provide documents for them to anchor in Malaysian waters," Kama Azri added.

The ship's captain and a crew member have been detained and brought back to the MMEA jetty in Sungai Pulai to assist with investigations.
