IGP calls for integration of forensic science with information technology

KUALA LUMPUR: Forensic science should be integrated with the latest information technology to enhance police investigations and facilitate a smoother, more effective legal process, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail.

He said closer collaboration between security agencies, the judiciary and forensic experts was crucial to effectively proving cases in court.

"The understanding of judges and members of the judiciary on the use of forensic science also needs to be enhanced so that expert opinions are in line with the increasingly complex nature of crime,” he told reporters after closing the sixth edition of the National Forensic Science Symposium for Law Enforcement (NAFSLE) at the Police College on Thursday (Sept 11).

Mohd Khalid emphasised that the rapid development of technology necessitates the police to continually apply forensic approaches in line with technological advancements.

"With current technological advancements, many issues need to be resolved with technology.

“Therefore, the combination of technology, experience and knowledge among the relevant agencies is vital to ensure justice is served,” he said.

He added that integrating information technology with forensic science was an ongoing necessity to ensure both investigations and trials ran smoothly.

"The adoption of the latest IT capabilities alongside forensic science must go hand in hand to make sure everything functions well and efficiently,” he said.
