Woman who tried to hug Perak Ruler charged with assault

IPOH: The 41-year-old woman who tried to hug Perak's Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah during the state-level Independence Day celebration here has been charged with assault.

Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, from Kampung Manjoi, was charged under Section 352 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan on Monday (Sept 8).

No plea was recorded.

Nurhaswani Afni was said to have committed the offence in front of the Ipoh Town Hall on Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab at 8.20am on Aug 31.

If convicted, she could face up to three months in jail, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani said findings of the investigation indicated that the accused may be suffering from schizophrenia.

"We request that the accused be observed for a month to determine whether or not she is fit to stand for trial," he said.

Magistrate Harith then ordered the woman to be sent to Hospital Bahagia in Ulu Kinta for a month's observation.

He also set Oct 8 for next mention of the case.

During the incident, the accused allegedly rushed towards the Sultan on stage while the state anthem was being played and attempted to hug him.

She was stopped by security personnel before being led away.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin had said after the incident that the woman was found to have previous drug-related cases and is also under psychiatric supervision.
