LABUAN: Several houses were badly damaged with their roofs blown away and traffic was obstructed by fallen trees after strong winds and heavy rain hit major parts of Labuan on Friday (Aug 29).

A Labuan Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the operations centre was inundated with calls from villagers reporting trees falling onto roads and in front of homes since 5pm. Emergency teams were dispatched immediately to assist in clearing the debris.

"We are working closely with other agencies to remove fallen trees and ensure road safety," the spokesman said, adding that no casualties had been reported as of press time.

The heavy downpour, which lasted for several hours, also caused flash flooding in some low-lying areas.

Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious, particularly as the monsoon season heightens the risk of sudden storms across the island. - Bernama
