Urban Renewal Bill not put to vote as Dewan Rakyat adjourns

KUALA LUMPUR: The July meeting of the Dewan Rakyat has adjourned without the Urban Renewal Bill being put to vote.

Debates and voting will resume when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes in October.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming had, however, tabled the Bill for the second reading.

Nga said the bill was brought to the National Council for Local Government on Aug 20, where state representatives including those under Opposition rule were present and it was unanimously agree that the Bill will be tabled in Parliament.

He said the views of Parliamentary Special Select Committee’s(PSSC) has also been sought.

"The areas identified for the implementation of urban renewal are proposed by the state authorities and gazetted by the respective state governments, not by the Federal Government through the PLANMalaysia," he said.

For example, he said the Terengganu state government had identified 22 sites, while the Kedah state government has identified 55 sites that have potential for urban renewal implementation. Kelantan has identified four sites.

"All these were agreed, proposed and gazetted by the states," he said, adding that the gazette for Kuala Terengganu goes as back to 2015.
