PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Brunei are looking forward to the completion of the Pan Borneo Highway to further strengthen regional connectivity and create greater opportunities for tourism and broader economic collaboration between Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak.
The two countries also underscored their commitment to deepen cooperation in agriculture, immigration and youth development, alongside food security and cross-border mobility.
In a statement released after Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held discussions at the 26th Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation, both leaders highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge and expertise in agriculture.
“Both leaders look forward to continued agricultural cooperation for the benefit of both countries,” the statement read.
The leaders also acknowledged cooperation between Unified National Network (Brunei) and Sacofa (Sarawak) to enter a new seven-year agreement in 2026, on the bandwidth leasing model in the telecommunication sector.
“The leaders underlined the importance of connectivity between Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak, as the foundation for closer economic integration and people-to-people exchanges,” the statement read.
They reiterated their shared commitment to effective and secure border management in addressing key immigration issues, operational coordination and facilitating safe and orderly cross-border movement.
Both leaders welcomed the Brunei-Malaysia Frequent Traveller Programme which streamlines cross-border travel for smoother mobility, eases congestion at checkpoints and enhances cross-border efficiency.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Anwar noted the ongoing negotiations on a draft memorandum between Brunei and Sabah to enable Sabahan students to pursue higher education in Brunei.
The statement said that Malaysia and Brunei have also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation under Asean-led security and defence mechanisms in addressing both traditional and non-traditional security challenges.
