Woman hurt after car hits elephant in Mersing

MERSING: A woman was injured after the car she was driving hit an elephant that was crossing the road at KM12 of the Mersing-Endau Road last night.

Mersing police Chief Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said the incident occurred at about 10.40pm, as the woman, aged 47,  was driving a car from Mersing towards Endau when she saw the elephant crossing the road, but could not brake in time and hit the pachyderm.

"She was injured and given outpatient treatment at the Mersing Hospital, he said when contacted by Bernama today.

According to the Johor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), when contacted, said the elephant survived the incident and managed to return to the forest area.

"The route is indeed a designated elephant crossing area as it is located near its natural habitat in the Gunung Arong Forest Reserve. A Perhilitan team has been deployed to monitor the area and track the elephant’s movements,” said its spokesperson.

The department also advised road users to exercise extra caution, especially at night, as the Mersing-Endau route has been identified as an active wildlife crossing zone. - Bernama
