Deputy Speaker briefly offended by misheard remark from MP, draws laughs with response to clarification

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat saw a light moment after Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor was briefly offended when he misheard an MP telling him to lower his voice.

The issue began just after Ministers' Question Time (MQT) when Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS-Batang Sadong) was about to ask her question and praised Ramli for having a high-level of patience for presiding over a heated session earlier which saw MPs arguing over the Tabung Haji issue.

Ramli thought Rodiyah was chiding him as Deputy Speaker for having a loud voice.

“Batang Sadong stated that my voice was loud. I don’t deny that. What she should have done is to reprimand her friends in the House, not me.

“If MPs in this House, the 221 of you, feel that I am no longer qualified, then please table a motion against me,” said Ramli, who was visibly upset, said on Thursday (Aug 21) morning.

Rodiyah then swiftly stood up and corrected her remarks, saying that she was praising Ramli for having a high-level of patiences.

“They (MPs) were testing you and you have a high-level of patience. That is what I meant to say earlier,” she added.

Ramli was then heard saying "Cair saya (I’ve melted)", to which MPs were heard laughing.

Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup then proceeded to deliver his reply in Parliament on plans to make Sarawak a food-security hub in Malaysia.

Earlier, Ramli was heard reprimanding MPs for arguing over an issue involving the Tabung Haji rebranding exercise.

“I am upset because I don’t want youths to follow our behaviour here,” said Ramli.

The current Parliament session which began on July 21 will sit until Aug 28.
