Police seize 46kg of ganja worth RM142,600 in Penang bust

GEORGE TOWN: A bust at a ganja storage facility uncovered 46kg of drugs worth RM142,600.

The operation by the Northeast district Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department ran from 10pm on Friday to 7am on Saturday.

It covered several locations.

State police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail said the operation found the drugs at two homes and in a Toyota Alphard.

"The seizures included 30 compressed blocks of ganja weighing 29.94kg and 16 additional blocks weighing 16.17kg. "In total, the drugs could supply up to 92,000 uses," he added.

Comm Azizee said five local men aged 38 to 56 were arrested.

"They are believed to have been active in ganja distribution since February 2025," he said.

"Urine tests showed four suspects were positive for tetrahydrocannabinol and one for methamphetamine," he said.

"Checks also revealed that two suspects have prior drug-related cases in their criminal record," he added.

"All five men were remanded for seven days from Saturday to August 22 to assist investigations," said Comm Azizee.

He said two vehicles worth RM47,000 were confiscated under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.

"This brings the total value of drugs and seized assets to RM189,600," he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Upon conviction, it carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, plus a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
