Tawau teen arrested over alleged extortion bid

KOTA KINABALU: A teenager was arrested for allegedly trying to extort money from a man in Tawau over the weekend.

The 17-year-old suspect had apparently sent a text message to the man, asking for a sum of money if he did not want his girlfriend getting hurt.

Following the message, the man lodged a police report.

Tawau police then tracked down the suspect and nabbed her on Sunday (Aug 10) to facilitate probes under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.

A mobile phone believed to have been used to send the threatening message was also seized.

The motive of the case is still under investigation.

In an unrelated incident, a foreigner was nabbed for allegedly hurting his workmate with an oil palm harvesting tool over a misunderstanding.

The suspect, in his 30s, was nabbed at a house in Kg Seri Aman on Sunday. He is the second suspect to be arrested over the incident.

The first person, an undocumented worker, was nabbed in Kg Kurnia Jaya on Aug 8.

The victim sustained injuries to his face following the incident.
