CYBERJAYA: Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, alongside his counterparts from Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia, will undertake a visit to Myanmar on Sept 19.
The Foreign Minister said that this was to get a clear picture of the new administration in Myanmar following the end of the state of emergency there.
"So, that’s what I want to look into. Because they have already clearly stated that Myanmar will be holding elections.
"That’s why they have already lifted or have not extended their state of emergency, which is in accordance with their constitution.
"So, I want to discuss with them whether their elections will be comprehensive," he told reporters after attending the 58th Asean Day celebration at the Cyber Event Hall here on Friday (Aug 8).
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his speech at the same event, said that Asean had made some progress in terms of securing a ceasefire in Myanmar.
"And our foreign minister, together with foreign ministers of Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, as I was made to understand, will be visiting Myanmar soon.
"(This is) to impress upon them, to stay on course, start with an end of violence and cessation of hostilities and pursue with dialogue with all the stakeholders and players, within," said Anwar.
