Year Six pupil drowns in Baling quarry


BALING: A Year Six pupil has been found drowned after falling into a sand quarry while fishing with two friends in Taman Mesra Ria, Kupang, near here.

Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief Assistant Fire Supt Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil, said the victim, Muhammad Farish Syazwi Mohamad Sukri, 12, is believed to have slipped and fallen into the quarry.

"The fire department received a call about the incident at 4.30pm and deployed a team of six firemen to the location," he said on Thursday (Aug 7), adding they used a surface search technique in the water.

He added that the boy's body was found about 3km from where he fell into the after a two-hour search.

"The victim's body was discovered at 6.25pm by his uncle, who was also part of the search," he said.

Zulkhairi said the boy was confirmed dead by Health Ministry personnel and the body was handed over to the police for further action. – Bernama
