KUALA SELANGOR: The Selangor prosecution has rejected a representation by a woman seeking to have a charge against her for possessing a pistol, allegedly supplied to Israeli national Avitan Shalom, withdrawn.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Azamuddin Razak informed the Sessions Court of the decision during the mention of Sharifah Faraha Syed Husin's case before judge Nurul Mardhiah Mohammed Redza today.
"The representation submitted by Sharifah Faraha to the Selangor prosecution to have her charge dropped has been rejected," he told the court, which then fixed Oct 6, 7, 8, 13 and 17 for trial. Sharifah Faraha, 42, is represented by counsel Datuk Dr Mohd Radzuan Ibrahim.
Outside the courtroom, Muhammad Azamuddin told media that the prosecution will call 10 witnesses to testify during the trial.
On April 8, 2024, Sharifah Faraha pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing a CZ 75 P‑01 CAL.9 Luger pistol at a house in Kampung Bukit Belimbing, Kuala Selangor, at 8pm on March 29, 2024.
She was charged under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years and a minimum of six strokes of the cane upon conviction.
On June 5, her husband, Abdul Azim Mohd Yasin, 44, pleaded guilty to a related charge and was sentenced by the same court to 10 years' imprisonment and six strokes of the cane.
According to the charge, Abdul Azim was alleged to have been with Sharifah Faraha under circumstances that gave reasonable grounds to believe he knew she possessed the firearm at the same location, date and time.
He was charged under Section 9 of the same Act, which prescribes an identical penalty.
Earlier, on Feb 26, Avitan Shalom was sentenced by the Kajang Sessions Court to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing 200 rounds of ammunition and six firearms.
Avitan, 39, was charged with committing the offence in a hotel room in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, between 6.46 pm on March 26 and 6 pm on March 28 last year. - Bernama
