PAC starts probe into cooking oil subsidy and price control management

KUALA LUMPUR: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has initiated proceedings to examine the management of price control and cooking oil subsidies, according to Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The PAC chairman stated that these proceedings aim to ensure effective subsidy management and price control mechanisms.

"This initiative is crucial as it directly impacts the people and the government's expenditure," she informed reporters at Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 6).

Mas Ermieyati explained that the proceedings, conducted on Aug 5 and Aug 6, involved testimonies from key figures, including Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Sayuthi Bakar and representatives from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia and the Home Ministry.

"Our goal is to examine every aspect of the cooking oil supply chain, from associations like the Malayan Edible Oil Manufacturers' Association (MEOMA) to refineries and packaging companies.

"We are dedicated to ensuring the effectiveness of public spending," said Mas Ermieyati, who is also Masjid Tanah MP.

She added that the PAC received a comprehensive briefing on government procurement processes from Finance Ministry secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican on Monday (Aug 4).

This briefing covered government procurement methods, the role of the Approving Authority, and the implementation of selective pre-qualification open tenders.
