Abang Iskandar bids farewell as Court of Appeal president, leaves legacy of justice

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim left his position as the Court of Appeal president with hopes that future judges will uphold justice without fear or favour.

The 66-year-old, whose birthday was on Thursday (July 3), was celebrated by his fellow judges and staff in a low-key farewell ceremony at his office on his last working day on Wednesday (July 2).

Abang Iskandar also took the time to meet the press for a quick farewell and photos.

In a farewell note, he wrote that it was a bittersweet feeling to leave the judiciary behind.

He expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he received during his career as a judge, which started in 2007.

During his service, Abang Iskandar said he met many kind-hearted and dedicated judges, officers of the court, law practitioners and academics who upheld justice.

“This has made it easy for me to carry out my job and responsibility as the Court of Appeal president as well as a Federal Court judge.

“I appreciate their contributions,” he said.

Abang Iskandar said he would focus on starting a new phase in his life with his family, charity work and hobby.

The Sarawakian made history when he was appointed as the 12th Court of Appeal president on Jan 17, 2023 as the first judge from Sabah and Sarawak to be appointed to the post.

This is the second top position in the judiciary after the Chief Justice.
