Customs Dept foils attempt to smuggle over 50kg of drugs via air courier


SEPANG: The Customs Department has seized millions worth of ganja buds and illegal cigarettes after intercepting suspicious packages at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport Customs Department director Zulkifli Muhammad stated that between April and May, the department stopped 19 parcels at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Free Commercial Zone.

"Checks showed that the packages contained what we believe to be ganja buds. It is believed that the drugs were about to be smuggled out of the country," he said in a statement on Thursday (June 26).

Approximately 56.8kg of the suspected drugs, worth RM5,566,974.28, were seized.

In a separate case, over one and a half million illegal cigarettes were seized after two lorries were stopped in Klang on May 9.

Approximately 1,540,000 cigarettes, worth RM154,000, were confiscated, with duties and taxes amounting to RM1.03mil.

Investigations revealed that the deliveries were made at night to avoid checks from the authorities.

Zulkifli urged everyone to assist the department in combating smuggling operations and to avoid participating in such crimes.

"Smuggling not only affects the country by diminishing the nation's coffers, but it could also lead to public security issues," he said.
