Two arrested for assaulting cop at Penang police HQ

GEORGE TOWN: Two men have been arrested for causing hurt to, and using profanity on, a policeman in front of Penang police headquarters.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the policeman was on duty when the suspects, aged 19 and 20, entered the compound at about 4.30pm on Sunday (June 22) and were seen behaving suspiciously.

"A routine check was conducted, and the suspects were found to be under the influence of alcohol.

"They were then brought to the guard post for further inspection," he said here on Monday (June 23).

ACP Abdul Rozak said that while they were at the guard post, the suspects allegedly became aggressive.

He said one of them punched the policeman on the left cheek and the other bit him on the chest, while also hurling abuse at him.

Both suspects were then arrested and have been remanded until Wednesday (June 25) for investigations, he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for using offensive language.
