Public tip-off leads to capture of fugitive rape suspect in Sibu

SIBU: The rape suspect who escaped from custody at the Sibu Central Police Station on Saturday (June 21) afternoon has been caught.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspect, a 25-year-old Indonesian, was arrested by a police team near Jalan Terap at 12.26am on Monday (June 23) following an intensive manhunt.

"Acting on information from the public, police successfully rearrested the suspect... (who) was still in handcuffs and purple lock-up attire," he said.

According to ACP Zulkipli, the suspect is being investigated under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from lawful custody and faces two years' jail, a fine, or both if convicted.

ACP Zulkipli extended his appreciation to the public for their cooperation, which led to the successful arrest of the suspect.

"We urge the public not to speculate on the incident," he added.

In an earlier statement on Sunday (June 22), Zulkipli disclosed that the detainee had escaped while on remand in connection with a rape investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code.
