Elderly man escapes fire by skin of his feet

KOTA KINABALU: A man was injured while fleeing from his burning home in Kampung Dumpil, Putatan.

The 66-year-old man, believed to be living alone, sustained injuries to the soles of his feet as he tried to escape the fire, which destroyed two wooden houses in the Thursday night incident.

Putatan fire station chief Noor Sherriyana Bohari said the fire, which broke out around 9.30pm, completely razed the man’s small rented house, as well as a second larger house that was occupied by nine tenants.

Fortunately, all nine residents managed to escape unhurt.

Firefighters received an emergency call and arrived at the scene, just 2km away, within minutes.

“Two non-permanent structures were involved in the fire. The smaller unit was rented by a senior citizen who lived alone, while the larger one was occupied by multiple tenants.

“All residents of the larger house were able to evacuate safely.

“The injured man was given initial treatment by our team before being handed over to paramedics for further care at the hospital,” Noor Sherriyana said when contacted.
