Penang cops on hunt for cable thief who fled on foot after car chase

GEORGE TOWN: The police are on the lookout for a suspect who fled the scene during a cable theft that resulted in a car chase to the mainland.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the incident occurred when they received a call at 3.44am on Wednesday (June 4) about a cable theft at the Taman Nusantara Flats in George Town.

"Police personnel that responded to the call discovered a pick-up truck which fled from the scene, heading towards the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

"The police patrol vehicle was able to track the suspect's vehicle and pursued it from the entrance of the Penang Bridge heading towards Seberang Perai.

"The suspect's vehicle then fled towards the North-South Highway, heading north.

"Police personnel tried to stop the suspect's vehicle but the suspect did not obey the police officers' instructions," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 4).

ACP Abdul Rozak said in the end, the suspect's vehicle skidded into a ditch in Bedong, Sungai Petani, Kedah.

"The suspect then got out of the vehicle and fled into the nearby jungle area.

"We have seized the suspect's vehicle and upon inspection have found that there was a cable cutter and several cables that had been cut at the back of the vehicle.

"We are investigating this case under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft and are tracking down the suspect," he said.
