Fire claims life of four-year-old boy in Melaka

MELAKA: A four-year-old boy tragically lost his life in a fire on the sixth floor of the People's Housing Project (PPR) flats in Krubong.

The victim’s 43-year-old mother believed that he had been playing with a lighter before the incident occurred at around 2.20pm on Friday (May 16).

The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of the Operations Division, Senior Fire Superintendent Mohd Shahrom Laji said the victim's mother was interviewed at home on the sixth floor of the PPR Krubong building.

"The investigation is still ongoing. We have deployed the department's K9 unit to conduct a thorough investigation," he said.

Mohd Shahrom added that the child was found dead in the third bedroom of the flat on the sixth floor, lying on the floor with burn injuries. The boy was the fourth of five siblings, whose ages range from one to 13 years old.

"The actual cause of death is still under investigation, and the body of the victim has been handed over to the police for further action," he said.

Mohd Sharom said that the fire was fully extinguished by 3.24pm, with the involvement of 17 officers and personnel from the Cheng and Ayer Keroh Fire and Rescue stations.
