New waste-to-energy facility takes shape in Manjung

KAMPAR: A waste-to-energy (WTE) facility, which breaks down rubbish into biogas, is being developed in Manjung, says Sandrea Ng (pic).

The Perak local government chairman said the facility, which utilises the anaerobic digestion method, is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

“It is not the incinerator-type but an anaerobic (digestion) type, which can produce methane gas to be used for energy generation.

“It will help reduce the amount of waste at landfills,” she said in a press conference after visiting the Kampar landfill and dog pound in Jeram here yesterday.

An anaerobic digestion system would see organic waste being broken down to produce biogas, which can be used in energy generation.

“We are always trying to learn about the latest technology or technique that can help with waste management,” she added.

When asked whether the system would be expanded to other districts, Ng said there were a number of factors to consider.

She said these included the amount of waste collected in the respective districts and manpower required to run the facility.

“We will evaluate its suitability and decide later whether it can be expanded to other districts

“We will need to consider the amount of waste collected for better optimisation of the system,” she said, adding that another possibility was for several districts to be clustered and share the system.

“We also need to consider the suitability of a location (to build the facility),” she added.

To another question, Ng said the plan to build a thermal waste treatment plan at the landfill in Papan has been shelved.
