Baby in critical condition in Melaka due to abuse

MELAKA: A two-month-old baby boy is in a critical condition after allegedly being abused by his biological mother at their home in Taman Seri Pelangi, Sungai Petai, Alor Gajah.

The abuse was discovered when the 22-year-old mother took the unconscious baby to Alor Gajah Hospital in the early hours of Monday (May 5).

She had said that her child had a seizure, before leaving him there

The child was found with internal head bleeding as well as wounds and bruises on his body.

A source said the baby was later transferred to Melaka Hospital on the same day (May 6), where specialists found bruises and wounds on his body and neck along with both old and recent head bleeding.

"A 34-year-old medical officer subsequently lodged a police report on suspicion of abuse, and the baby is now being treated in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Melaka Hospital," the source said.

Following the report, police arrested the mother and her 22-year-old husband at 7.30pm on Monday (May 6) at Melaka Hospital.

The couple are originally from Semenyih, Selangor and moved here seeking employment.

Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar confirmed the arrest when contacted.

He said police would seek to remand the couple on Wednesday (May 7) to assist with the investigation.
