22nd Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Information begins today


BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The 22nd Asean Senior Officials Meeting Responsible for Information (SOMRI) and Related Meetings began here on Monday.

The two-day event at a hotel here gathers senior representatives from Asean Member States to strengthen regional cooperation in the field of information and media.

The 22nd SOMRI will discuss emerging issues such as disinformation, misinformation, digital inclusivity, the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI), and digital transformation.

Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa leads the Malaysian delegation to SOMRI.

Also in the delegation are Information Department (JaPen) Communications and Community Development Service Division director Muhammad Najmi Mustapha and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Head of International Affairs Division Norhani Mohamad Adzhar.

The delegation also includes MCMC Director II (Asean and Bilateral) Fatin Nabiha Ab Aziz, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Executive Editor for International News Service Mohd Shukri Ishak, as well as other high-ranking officials from the Communications Ministry and its agencies.

On Tuesday (May 6), SOMRI will continue with the 8th SOMRI Plus Three (China, Japan and South Korea) and 5th SOMRI Plus Japan meetings.

Themed "MAJU-Media Advancing Joint Understanding: Transforming Media’s Role in Advancing Cooperation and Mutual Understanding in Asean,” the SOMRI meeting aims to strengthen regional cooperation in broadcasting, media, and digital content, while supporting initiatives that foster Asean identity and regional integration. - Bernama
