Students hit with food poisoning at Johor boarding school


JOHOR BARU: Sixteen students at a boarding school here have suffered food poisoning, with symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting, says Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon.

He said the students are believed to have consumed food served by the on-campus canteen.

"The students were said to have started experiencing symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, and vomiting on Friday evening (May 2).

"We received a complaint about the incident on Saturday (May 3), and a team from the Johor Baru Health Office has been sent to the campus to investigate, including interviewing the victims," he told reporters after launching an adult playground facility at a shopping mall on Saturday.

Ling said some of the students have sought treatment at government and private healthcare facilities.

He added that the Health Department has advised the school canteen to cease operations temporarily to allow for clean-up works.

"This is standard operating procedure while the necessary investigations take place.

The canteen will only be allowed to reopen upon receiving approval from the district health officer," said Ling.
