Unemployed JB youth charged with possession, trafficking drugs


JOHOR BARU: An unemployed local youth has been charged at a Magistrate's Court here for allegedly trafficking and possessing more than 225g of drugs.

The accused, Lim Ken Yi, 23, only nodded his head after the charges were read out to him before Magistrate Azureen Sahira Sauffee Afandi here on Friday (May 2).

Based on the first charge sheet, he was accused of allegedly trafficking 219.06g of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) along Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir here at around 1.30pm on April 20.

For the second charge, Lim was accused of possessing 6g of ketamine at the same time and location.

No plea was recorded from him.

He was charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 12 of the same Act, which carries the death sentence or life imprisonment upon conviction

No bail was offered and Magistrate Azureen Sahira set June 25 for the next mention for handing over documents.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Aishah Latif prosecuted the case while the accused was not represented.

On Tuesday (April 29), police arrested five suspects, including the accused, during a major operation across four districts in Johor that led to the arrest of five men, including a Singaporean, and the seizure of drugs worth nearly RM9mil.

The five-day special operation, launched by the Johor police from April 20 until 24 targeted syndicates operating in Johor Baru, Batu Pahat, Kota Tinggi, and Kluang.

The raids resulted in the confiscation of various drugs including syabu, ecstasy, ketamine, Erimin 5 pills, heroin, ganja, and yaba pills, with a total street value of RM8.97mil.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the successful raids reflect the police’s continued commitment to battling drug distribution networks.

“We have struck a significant blow to drug syndicates with the arrest of five suspects, aged between 22 and 47 years old, including a Singaporean.

“These operations dismantled well-organised distribution channels that used gated and guarded apartments and vehicles to store and move drugs,” he said
