Duo nabbed over attempted snatch theft seen in viral video


PASIR GUDANG: Two local men were arrested for attempting to rob a local woman after a video of the incident went viral on social media platforms.

Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Sohaimi Ishak said the attempted snatch theft happened at Bandar Seri Alam near here on Wednesday (April 30) at 4.30pm.

“The suspects, aged 25 and 35 years old, respectively, were detained on Thursday (May 1) at 6.20pm also in Bandar Seri Alam,’’ he said in a statement Friday (May 2).

ACP Sohaimi said the duo on a motorcycle had endeavoured to snatch the woman’s handbag but failed.

He said the initial investigation showed the suspects did not have previous criminal records but they tested positive for methamphetamine.

“We also seized a motorcycle, two mobile phones and two sets of clothes from the suspects,’’ said ACP Sohaimi, adding that both of them have been remanded until May 7 to assist with investigations.

The 60-second video was uploaded by a user uing the handle “Ah Cheng Loh” to a Seri Alam Masai Facebook group.

ACP Sohaimi said the case is being investigated under Section 393 of the Penal Code and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
