Peaceful Assembly Act could be amended by October

PUTRAJAYA: Amendments to strengthen the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 could be tabled in the Parliament sitting as early as June this year, says government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

“We expect the amendments to be brought to the earliest Parliament sitting or at the latest by October,” said the Communications Minister in his weekly briefing at the Communications Ministry in Putrajaya on Wednesday (April 30).

Fahmi also said that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail recently informed the Cabinet that, from 2020 to 2024, 99% of approvals were granted for gatherings.

“Nearly all applications were approved. This is a good figure and we believe that when the amendments are brought to parliament, civil rights to assemble will be strengthened,” added Fahmi.

The next Parliament session will take place from June 23 till July 31 this year, while the last meeting will be on Oct 6 until Dec 4 this year.
