Man duped out of deposit in homestay rental scam

KUALA LUMPUR: A man seeking to rent a house lost his deposit after discovering the property he inspected was actually a homestay.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Aidil Bolhassan said the victim saw the property online and believed it was available for rent.

"The complainant communicated with someone identifying as 'Coco Chan', and an inspection of the property was arranged.

"On Friday (April 25) at about 7.45pm, the complainant went to Razak City Residence and met a woman named Natasha, who introduced herself as the responsible agent. After the viewing, he was asked to pay a deposit of RM1,150," he said.

However, after payment, he received various excuses when he requested the rental agreement.

"He then realised he had been duped after finding out the home was a homestay and not available for rent. Investigations are ongoing," he said.
