Saarani says Ramli's Perak links bode well for relations with Penang

IPOH: The appointment of Tun Ramli Ngah Talib as the ninth Yang di-Pertua Negri of Penang is suitable, as he has previously held several positions in the government, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said that Ramli, 84, was a former deputy minister and also the eighth Perak mentri besar for a period of 17 years from 1982 to 1999.

"In my view, he is well-suited for the appointment. I have personally congratulated him and he has responded by expressing his gratitude for being entrusted with the role," he told reporters after attending the Riang Ria Aidilfitri GLC open house here on Sunday (April 27).

"Of course, we hope that we can further strengthen the good relations with Penang," he added.

Ramli, who is also a former Dewan Rakyat speaker, was appointed as the ninth Penang Governor from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2029.

He received the instrument of appointment from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia on Thursday (April 24).

Rahim was also conferred the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN) award, which carries the title "Tun".

He takes over from Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, who held the post since May 1, 2021.
