Anwar thanks Myanmar's junta, NUG for commitments to ensure humanitarian relief

PUTRAJAYA: Both Myanmar’s State Administration Council (SAC) and the National Unity Government (NUG) have expressed the spirit to avoid any further escalation of fighting in the country, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said this was to ensure the focus on humanitarian efforts in Myanmar amidst ongoing conflicts.

“The spirit of both the SAC and NUG is that the priority must be in humanitarian efforts and reconstruction.

“Meanwhile, they would do whatever that is necessary to avoid any extension of the fighting,” he said.

Anwar also expressed his gratitude for both organisations for their firm positions over this matter to ensure the help can be delivered peacefully.

When asked about whether Asean member states will be discussing the issue pertaining to the bloc, Anwar said he would need to consult his counterparts.

“I will need to consult with my counterparts, the Asean leaders.

“Because Asean’s position is continued engagement, the five-point consensus and inclusive discussion with all parties, then I will bring ot back to Asean,” he added.

The Prime Minister was met after attending the Finance Ministry Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House here upon arriving from his two-day work visit to Bangkok, Thailand.

Earlier, Anwar was reported to have had meetings with both SAC chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and NUG chairman Mahn Win Khaing Than during his meeting in the Kingdom.
