MACC gets six-day remand for Bersatu deputy info chief to help probe into bribery claims

MELAKA: Bersatu deputy information chief Datuk Seri Ali Mohamad has been arrested over alleged bribery relating to a land reclamation project amounting to RM44mil.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Melaka director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest.

Ali, popularly known as "Cikgu Ali", was arrested at 4.55pm on Monday (April 14) when he turned up at Melaka MACC headquarters.

MACC applied for a six-day remand order on Tuesday (April 15) to assist investigations under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting and accepting bribes.

The MACC also recorded statements from Ali's immediate family members and released them on Monday night.

The former Tangga Batu Umno chief and state liaison committee deputy chairman had his party membership revoked after he decided to join Bersatu in May, last year.

He also served as the deputy president of the Dewan Negara from Dec 2020 to May 2023.

In a statement to The Star, Bersatu information committee chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin alleged that the arrest was politically motivated.
