Floods: Continuous rain causes flash floods in several parts of Johor

JOHOR BARU: Several areas in Johor have begun experiencing flash floods following heavy rain that started at about 2pm on Sunday (April 13).

The continuous downpour, which lasted for more than an hour, caused rising water levels in low-lying areas, particularly in the districts of Johor Baru, Kulai and Kota Tinggi.

The Johor Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said the situation is being closely monitored, with district officers instructed to remain on high alert for possible evacuations.

“Floodwaters began rising in some residential areas and roads by late afternoon. As of 4pm, no temporary relief centres (PPS) have been activated, but preparations are in place should the situation worsen,” said a JPBN spokesman in a statement.

Videos and photos circulating on social media showed vehicles struggling to navigate submerged roads, with water entering homes in some areas.

The Fire and Rescue Department confirmed receiving several distress calls related to flash floods and inundated roads, adding that personnel had been deployed to assist affected residents.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a thunderstorm warning for all districts in Johor, forecasting more heavy rain and strong winds until 5pm Sunday.

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone areas and follow updates from official sources.

Johor Lama assemblyman Norliza Noh, when contacted, said no PPS had been opened in Felda Air Tawar 3, following a viral video showing an elderly man being rescued after almost being swept away by strong currents.

“The flooded area is located along the main road towards the settlement,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bukit Permai assemblyman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said that only Bukit Batu in Kulai had reported rising water levels, but no PPS had been opened so far.
