More cases among students reported as Mara intensifies bullying prevention efforts

KUALA LUMPUR: Two more bullying cases involving Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) educational institutions (IPMa) have been reported after its chairman, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (pic), called for students to report such incidents.

Asyraf said Mara was investigating the reports to address bullying cases among students at IPMa and Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM).

“The Mara director-general has informed that one to two cases have been reported, and I have instructed that an investigation be carried out.

“We have been very vocal about zero tolerance against bullying, we will not compromise, normalise or even any form either physical or mental of bullying to happen (in Mara),” he said at a press conference after the Amazing Syawal Hari Raya Aidil Fitri event at Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) here, on Thursday (April 10).

Asyraf had earlier posted on his social media account, encouraging students to report on the facilities at Mara institutions and bullying cases to him directly.

His post was made following a viral video showing a group of teenage boys bullying and pinning another boy down on a bed.

It was reported that the one-minute, 31-second video was recorded at an MRSM in Penang's South Seberang Prai district in mid-last year.

Asyraf said that since his appointment as the Mara chairman, he had set various initiatives to prevent bullying, including special training with counsellors, periodic monitoring, as well as direct involvement from the Mara leadership.

He said this effective measure was displayed in a recent incident at an MRSM, where the investigation and recommendation by the disciplinary committee were made within 24 hours after the report was made.

“Such a fast measure proved that Mara is serious in addressing bullying incidents,” he added.
