KUALA PILAH: A 32-year-old man claimed trial in the Magistrate's court here to a charge of causing injury to his wife.
Lee Jia Cheng pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Yusna Khadijah Md Yusop.
He was charged with biting his wife, who is also 32, on her forehead, arms and shoulder at their home in Taman Wira Jaya.
The offence was allegedly committed around 3.20am on April 1.
The accused, who runs a provision shop, was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same legislation.
Offenders can be jailed for up to a year or fined up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.
Section 326A provides for a prison term twice as long as the maximum term under Section 323.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Farahana Athirah Yaacob told the court her team was not offering the accused bail as she did not want him to be close to the victim.
The accused who was unrepresented appealed for bail as he had to provide for his wife, their two-year-old daughter and parents.
The court allowed the accused to be released on a RM6,000 bail and ordered him to stay away from the victim and other witnesses till the case is disposed of.
He is also required to report at the nearest police station once a month.
Yusna Khadijah then fixed May 15 for remention and to allow the accused to appoint a counsel.
The man was arrested after the victim lodged a police report claiming that he had assaulted her on three occasions.
She claimed that she had been a victim of domestic violence since 2022 when she was pregnant, and then the next incident happened last year.
She is temporarily living with her brother in Seremban.
