KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has clarified that the recent discovery of a man’s body near its campus does not involve any of its students or staff.
In a statement issued on Saturday (April 5), the university said the incident took place outside its campus boundaries and had no connection to the UMS community.
"The matter has been handed over to the relevant authorities for further action," the university said, urging the public to refrain from speculation that could cause confusion.
The clarification follows the discovery of the body of a man, believed to be in his 20s, who was found hanging from a tree on a hillside across from Kampung Kibagu on Friday (April 4).
Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department station chief Deputy Supt Ordine Gilu said they received a call from the police at 1.20pm requesting assistance to retrieve the body.
A team of seven firefighters, led by operations commander Asama Saruddin, was dispatched to the scene, about 16km from the station.
"Upon arrival, the team confirmed the presence of a man hanging from a tree branch," he said.
Firefighters used ropes and a pulley system to lower the body, a process that took about an hour.
The man was pronounced dead by medical personnel, and his body was handed over to police for further investigation.
