Search for contractor still underway, say police

PETALING JAYA: Police will interview the contractor behind the development of buildings near the site of the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights here as soon as the party can be contacted, says Subang Jaya police chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat.

In a press conference yesterday, he said the “search is ongoing for the contractor who has yet to be identified”.

ACP Wan Azlan said police will also investigate if a work permit to carry out construction was obtained after consent was sought from the relevant authorities such as the Subang Jaya City Council and PETRONAS.

“We have recorded the statements of the victims who are at hospitals and relief centres for our investigations into the case,” he said at the Incident Control Post at Putra Heights yesterday.

ACP Wan Azlan added that investigators found there were still a few small fires at several affected houses, and firemen were keeping watch to ensure the situation remained under control.

He said residents of the lesser affected areas will be allowed to retrieve their belongings and important documents accompanied by police, but those from the more severely hit areas will only be allowed to do so on another day.

He said residents were also allowed to drive out their vehicles that are still serviceable, while Tenaga Nasional Bhd is attempting to resume power supply to the affected areas.

“Police dog units also searched the affected houses for bodies or anyone left behind, but we found none.

“The forensic unit of the police is also gathering soil samples for investigations,” said ACP Wan Azlan.

Petronas is monitoring the pipeline for residual gas and has found it safe for inspections and investigations, he said.

So far, the police have received 66 reports from house owners and vehicle owners, with ACP Wan Azlan adding that personnel will be stationed at the affected areas to keep looters away.
