PETALING JAYA: Homeowners affected by the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion can breathe a little easier as insurance compensation for most standard home and contents insurance policies in Malaysia provide coverage for damage caused by explosions, says the General Insurance Association Of Malaysia (PIAM).
However, the association said policyholders should clarify this with their own insurers or peruse the product disclosure statement to better understand the coverage of their insurance.
"Compensation is typically based on rebuilding cost. Contact your insurer as soon as possible, as coverage terms may vary," it said in a statement Wednesday (April 2).
PIAM pointed out that the key areas of coverage are fire damage which covers damage from direct burning, heat, smoke, and extinguishment water, which can affect nearby properties; homeowners' policy which covers damage from explosions, including gas pipeline explosions with compensation based on rebuilding costs and commercial fire policy where coverage for explosions depends on the terms in the policy and compensation is based on rebuilding costs.
It added that medical health insurance policies cover medical treatment for injuries sustained from an incident; personal accident policies provide coverage in case of permanent disablement or death where claims can be filed by the insured or their next of kin and comprehensive motor or third-party fire and theft policies cover fire-related damage to vehicles.
As for the compensation sums involved in the payout for victims involved in the Putra Heights gas pipeline fire, PIAM said that it still was too early to determine but its members will assess the situation as claims are received from those affected.
"We recognise the emotional and financial toll this tragic event has had on families and business owners. Our industry is committed to making the claims process as smooth as possible, ensuring policyholders receive the assistance they need.
"We are anticipating a large number of claims as property and vehicle owners begin to head back to the affected area and we are prepared to support them every step of the way,” PIAM chairman Ng Kok Kheng said.
The association also advised residents returning to their affected houses to ensure they ventilate the area as residual gas may linger.
"Do not enter your homes until it’s declared safe by authorities. Seek medical assistance if you or anyone around you exhibit concerning health symptoms, especially children or the elderly.
"Contact your insurer as soon as possible to initiate claims and seek guidance on the claims process. Before you start your clean-up, document the damage with photos and videos to support an insurance claim," the statement added.
PIAM said the details needed to support an insurance claim include making a list of damaged items, including brand, model and serial numbers, if possible.
It also advised homeowners to obtain written approval from their insurers before proceeding with any house repairs, including emergency work, as unauthorised work may not be covered by the policy.
PIAM said support is available directly through insurers, via agents and brokers, or through existing online platforms such as the Digital Roadside Assistance application (DRA).
