MP calls for professional and ethical investigation into Ismail Sabri’s case

JOHOR BARU: Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct a professional and ethical investigation into former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, expressing concerns over the agency’s handling of the case.

In a statement, Hassan, who previously served on the Parliamentary Special Committee on Corruption overseeing MACC, questioned the agency’s approach, suggesting that due process may have been compromised.

He questioned why evidence related to the case was publicly disclosed before the investigation was concluded.

"Normally, evidence is presented during court proceedings.

"However, in this case, despite the probe being incomplete, key materials have already been exhibited in a press conference. What is the purpose of this?” he said.

Hassan also raised concerns that the investigation papers have yet to be submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers, yet Ismail Sabri has already been scrutinised in the media.

While reaffirming his full support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s anti-corruption agenda, Hassan stressed the need for MACC to remain within its professional and legal boundaries.

"As someone who has served on the committee, I have full confidence in MACC’s capabilities. However, in this particular case, there are clear violations of professional ethics by an enforcement agency," he said.

He urged MACC to focus solely on its investigative role and leave the prosecution process to the Attorney General’s Chambers.

"In our collective effort to combat corruption, MACC must ensure that it does not overstep its mandate by taking on the role of prosecutor, which is beyond its jurisdiction," he added.
