PETALING JAYA: In 2024, flood-related losses in Malaysia reached RM933.4 million, an increase from RM755.4 million in 2023, reports the Department of Statistics Malaysia (Dosm).
Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said these losses include the value of damage to living quarters, vehicles, businesses and industrial premises.
He added that the figure was also equivalent to 0.05% of the country’s nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"Data from relevant government agencies were used for assessing damage to the agricultural industry and public assets and infrastructure," he said in a statement on Wednesday (March 19).
Living quarters recorded the highest losses at RM372.2mil (2023: RM168.3mil), followed by public assets and infrastructure at RM303.4mil (2023: RM380.7mil).
"Losses in the agriculture sector increased to RM185.2mil (2023: RM120.6mil), while business premises incurred RM54.1mil (2023: RM53.2 mil) in damages.
"Vehicle losses stood at RM17.3mil (2023: RM22.3mil), with the manufacturing sector experiencing the lowest impact at RM1.2 million (2023: RM10.3 million)," said Mohd Uzir.
Regarding living quarters, Kelantan was the worst hit, with RM139mil, followed by Terengganu at RM103.1mil and Kedah at RM54mil.
"In Kelantan, the hardest-hit district was Pasir Mas with RM46.2mil in damages.
"Meanwhile, in Terengganu, Besut recorded the highest living quarter losses at RM38.4mil, while in Kedah, Kota Setar suffered the most losses amounting to RM22mil," he said.
Kelantan also recorded the highest business premise losses, totalling RM27.1mil, followed by Terengganu at 16.4mil and Kedah at RM4.3mil.
According to Mohd Uzir, Pasir Mas recorded the most substantial financial impact within Kelantan, with losses of RM9.8mil.
He said in Terengganu, Besut faced the largest losses, which stood at RM4mil.
In Kedah, Kota Setar suffered the highest losses at RM2.8mil.
Dosm said Terengganu recorded the highest vehicle damage losses, at RM5.8mil, followed by Kelantan, with RM4mil, and Kedah, with RM2.1mil.
In Terengganu, Besut was the worst-affected district, with RM1.4mil in vehicle losses, while in Kelantan, Tumpat registered the highest, with RM1.8mil.
In Kedah, Kota Setar suffered the highest losses at RM0.9mil.
As for the manufacturing sector, Mohd Uzir said Kelantan recorded RM1.01mil in losses, with Pasir Mas experiencing the highest impact at RM1mil, while Pasir Puteh and Tumpat reported relatively lower losses, each below RM100,000.
