KOTA KINABALU: The usual roar of fire trucks and blaring sirens took a backseat as some firefighters from the Lintas Fire and Rescue Station traded their helmets for chef’s hats in the spirit of Ramadan.
Dressed in aprons over their orange camouflage uniforms, they stirred steaming pots of bubur lambuk, a traditional savoury porridge, filling the air with the rich aroma of spices.
With ladles in hand, these everyday heroes showcased a different kind of teamwork, not in battling flames, but in ensuring the porridge was cooked to perfection before being packed and distributed.
The sight at the fire station was a far cry from their usual high-adrenaline environment.
Instead of dousing fires, they carefully measured coconut milk, tossed in fragrant herbs, and stirred giant pots over an open flame.
Lintas Fire and Rescue Department station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said the event was made even more memorable with the participation of their deputy director, Lizalman Abu.
“The programme was organised in collaboration with PETRONAS and Adabi. A total of seven pots of bubur lambuk were prepared and distributed to various community groups,” she said in a statement on Saturday (March 15).
She added that the bubur lambuk was distributed to fire stations in the Kota Kinabalu zone, as well as Menggatal and Inanam, Kingfisher police station, six mosques across the city, an orphanage, and customers at selected PETRONAS stations.
“This is just another way for us to serve the community. Usually, we are rushing in to save lives, but today, we are sharing blessings,” said Guasi.
