Man shot dead in Bukit Mertajam after opening fire on police


BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man, believed to be a foreigner in his 30s, was shot dead by police following a chase in Machang Bubok here.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said a patrol team spotted the suspect behaving suspiciously on Jalan Gajah Mati at 2.20am on Tuesday (March 11).

"When (they asked him) for his identification, the suspect rode off.

"A chase ensued, and when our team caught up with the suspect, he fired at them several times.

"Our team returned fire in self-defence, and shot the suspect dead," Comm Hamzah said in a statement.

He said a Glock pistol and heroin were found on the suspect.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, he added.
